MiLB Hats: The Good, the Great, the Bad

In Episode Seven-Point-Five: Hats, Hats, Hats of the Baseball Together Podcast, Brad, Tiff, and I discussed our favorite and least favorite baseball hats around. On the podcast, we were a bit limited for time and since I hate limiting my choices, I decided to put my full list of MiLB hats here.

These are my four favorite and the reigning champion least favorite baseball caps around MiLB. For the sake of brevity, I’ll list my favorite and least favorite Major League Baseball hats in another blog post.

Let’s start at the top.

Almost all of my favorite hats are associated with MiLB’s Copa de la Diversion celebration. The bright, wild colors. The fantastic team name variations. The inclusivity. I have a nearly endless number of reasons to love that time of year.

Lexington Legends Copa 2019

At the top of my list is the Lexington Legends Copa Cap from 2019. This baseball hat has everything you could want. Gaudy moustaches—yeah, I counted at least three—on a Sunday pink and Tiffany Blue sugar skull design. If you can find something more awesome than this, I’d love to see it.

Columbia Fireflies

Number two on my list goes to the Columbia Fireflies from Columbia, SC. Their gameday cap is awesome. But they actually have three baseball caps that are on equal footing in my book, though I think it’s easier to appreciate the variations once you see the official gameday hat. These guys are making excellent use of the safety yellow color, which is the color of a glow bug’s booty—in case you ever wondered. This club has a cap with a firefly, one with two “F”s that look like fireflies, and a cap with fireflies stuck in a Mason Jar. Because, duh.

Orem Owls Batting Practice Cap

This is the batting practice cap of the Orem Owlz. They are the wonderful Advanced Rookie affiliate of the Los Angeles Angels. I’ve been attending Owlz games since forever and they hold a special place in my heart. Take a look at this logo. Not only does it have a super cool owl on it, talons out, ready for a fight, but the owl is gripping twin baseball bats. The owl’s face features an amazing baseball stitched unibrow. Red, navy, white, yellow…if you can get all those colors to work together, you deserve mad props.

San Jose Giants X-mas in July 2017

I don’t know how far back this tradition goes, but it’s amazing. The San Jose Giants celebrate Christmas in July every year. The 2017 X-mas in July cap is nothing short of mind-blowing. It’s everything Christmas should be. Red and green, prancing reindeer and decorated evergreens, snowflakes, and symmetrical stripes…need I say more?

Worst: Anything by the Chattanooga Lookouts

When I first attended a Chattanooga Lookouts game, I was flabbergasted by what I saw. Not only was the hike up the stairs to the actual ball field a put off, but I couldn’t get behind the logo. I know Lookout Mountain in Chattanooga, TN is awesome and I know it’s a huge deal. Even if it’s not the worst team name in the history of MiLB, it is certainly the worst logo. They even found a way to obliterate everything that is cool about the 2019 New Era Stars and Stripes series
